statistics rant no 15,498

We have been comparing assessment results from three years. One of our biomedical scientists produced an analysis in about 10 seconds probably but as I am still at the beginning of a statistics journey – suddenly seeing that something was produced with two-tailed T test and trying to work this out manually – is probably not the best place to start. So after much searching on the web I found an explanation which actually showed what a tail was – but not at the beginning of the article. As someone who professionally tries to explain things to others, here is a possible example:

You are comparing the distribution of hairs in dog tails

This is one tail of the distribution of hairs:

These are the two tails of the distribution of hairs:

two tails in shape of bell curve

It’s pretty obvious what a tail is by now and what different results commonly look like on a graph…
