Maslenitsa at Pushkin House, London

I went with a friend to a Maslenitsa celebration this evening. He goes to Sweden quite a bit but has not visited Russia.

We now both know a version of Russian musical chairs and have tasted our first Russian blini. There was beautiful, enchanting singing and the stories of Maslenitsa customs explained. They mentioned that Sunday is a time of contemplation, cleaning out ‘spiritually’ after the winter, before Lent, even though some of the traditions are not religious practices.

My friend remarked that evenings like this make him realise how much we all have in common.
