LMS rules and roles vs operational rules and roles

After informal consultation with different staff groups I have developed a workaround where the learning management system rules and roles do not fit the operational practices of some of our staff groups.

There are different options with open source systems where you could potentially re-code the rules, however in this case I set up the following:

Radiotherapy operational teams are managed by a group of rotating superintendents (not continuously – would be a bit dizzy). So for managers to be aware of or approve course requests, this could involve a huge stream of notification emails going to their inboxes and who wants that!

I created a dummy ID number for 2 group mailboxes which are linked using LDAP – 1 for Chelsea, 1 for Sutton. The superintendents check the group mailboxes when convenient for them and it doesn’t affect reporting because learning completions still recorded against individual unique ids.

I have done the same for the bank staff so that the Temporary Staffing Manager checks when convenient and isn’t flooded.

This would not be so convenient to do in a proprietary system, so far so good.
